Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Alabama Partner with Kids Art Box | Happening here

The following information was provided by the organization:

The Boys & Girls Clubs of South Alabama received 3,000 Kids Art Box “My Artist” boxes as part of their children’s art program in 12 locations. Kids Art Box is a family business that uses the Montessori Method to teach children ages 3-12 how to create art. The Boys & Girls Club received a federal grant from the Department of Education to purchase the kits for the next three years. The kits come with all the necessary supplies and step-by-step instructions for completing the monthly projects.

Boys & Girls Clubs of South Alabama general manager Tim Wills said the organization had to make vital changes last year when the pandemic began. Staff began offering virtual resources through STEM, arts and music programs. Wills says his staff make art kits every week, packing more than 800 bags a week for students in the program. “Packing our own art kits took a lot of time and resources, but back then we couldn’t find an art company that knew how to teach art history from a box. We finally found Kids Art Box online and the good thing is that everything the kids need to complete the project is in the kits. Wills says art projects enhance a student’s creativity and critical learning skills.

Before the start of the pandemic, art was already eliminated from many schools across the country; when virtual learning became mainstream, art classes became almost non-existent. Kids Art Box founder Melanie Phillips says there are few comprehensive, in-depth courses dedicated to teaching kids the story of an artist in a fun and engaging way. “The ‘My Artist’ box takes abstract lessons about an artist, historical period and type of art and makes it practical. Children have the chance to immerse themselves in the life, style and work of the artist, while leaving the freedom to express their own creativity in the style of the artist, making the experience of much more engaging learning, ”said Phillips. Usually at $ 35, Kids Art Box sells “My Artist” boxes for $ 25 when nonprofits or educators buy in bulk.
