Dulquer Salmaan’s Chup Revenge Of The Artist Teaser Released

The trailer for R Balki’s upcoming psychological thriller Chup: Revenge Of The Artist has been released. Starring Dulquer Salmaan, Sunny Deol, Pooja Bhatt and Shreya Dhanwanthary, the film is an “ode” to actor Guru Dutt, who died aged 39 on October 10, 1964.

A play on Guru Dutt’s iconic film Kaagaz Ke Phool, the teaser of Chup opens with Salmaan’s character singing “Happy Birthday” to the tune of Geeta Dutt’s song”Waqt ne kiya kya haseen sitam.’ He also makes origami flowers and shouts out loud shortly after Dhanwanthary’s character points it out in a voiceover that Kaagaz Ke Phool was a critical failure upon its release.

Today marks the 97th birthday of Guru Dutt, revered for films such as pyaasa, Mr and Mrs 55 and ID among others. The failure of Kaagaz Ke Phool brought Dutt’s journey as a filmmaker to an abrupt end, as he never directed again. Although he produced and acted in films like Chaudhvin Ka Chand and Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam in the following years.

After achieving quite a bit of success, Dutt, in a 1956 interview, hinted that he didn’t really identify with what was called the “Guru Dutt style”. Instead, he wanted to explore “bold themes”. “I don’t want what they call Guru Dutt history anymore. I want new themes, bold themes.

said Salman Chup is not a “typical” film and recalls being puzzled when filmmaker R Balki approached him for the project. “When Balki Monsieur offered me Hush, I was shocked and said, ‘Are you really thinking of me for this role?’ Because it’s something I’ve never done before. It is not typical in any form. I think that for him too, it’s an experimental film but it’s something that interests me a lot. You will also all be curious about it when it comes out,” he added.

The directors had revealed the title of this film last October, on the occasion of the anniversary of the death of the legendary filmmaker, Balki stating that Chup is an “ode to the sensitive artist”.

The scenario and the dialogues of Chup were co-written by Balki, alongside film critic-turned-writer Raja Sen and Rishi Virmani. The film will mark Salmaan’s third Hindi release after Karwan (2018) and Sonam Kapoor-starring The Zoya Factor (2019). Outside of this project, Salmaan will also be seen in the series from director duo Raj & DK Guns and Gulaabswith Rajkummar Rao and Adarsh ​​Gourav.
