Recreating a scene from a show or movie with paper may seem like an impossible task, but the artist Ben Charman proves that it can be done with great effect. The London craftsman discovered the art of paper in 2019 and has built lovely light boxes ever since. He finds inspiration for his designs in popular culture, drawing inspiration from figures such as Avatar: The Last Airbender, Star wars, Pokemon, and Strange things.

“I followed different artists on Instagram and started learning to use different shades of color and different layers of paper to create artwork that had depth,” Charman told My Modern Met. “I use a lot of pop culture references in my work, and Avatar: The Last Airbender has been a huge inspiration over the past year and its new rise in popularity has helped catapult my work to a wider audience. His pieces use the distinct silhouettes of characters and animals as well as layers of paper cut out in the form of different natural elements to represent iconic scenes from the animated TV show.

And while in the photographs, Charman’s light boxes appear to be made of colored paper, he actually uses different ambient lighting to mimic this effect. “I was inspired by paper artists Hari & Deepti to start making paper light boxes, which are cut from white paper and then backlit to create amazing light pieces with shadows and depth, and I have had huge success making and selling them online, ”shares the artist. He often displays the same light box with different lighting to show how color affects the emotional narrative of the scene.

You can purchase original artwork and prints through Charman’s Etsy store, and stay informed of his latest projects by following the artist on Instagram.
