The Castellani Museum of Art at Niagara University (CAM) offers plenty of summertime opportunities for visitors of all ages and interests.

From Thursday, June 16, CAM will have new extended opening hours (every Thursday from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Friday to Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.). General admission is always free.

CAM will host a free festive reception from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 16 for three new early summer exhibits:

√ “Niagara in Summer and Winter” combines historic prints and contemporary artwork with timely images and text from a once popular souvenir book. CAM has one of the largest collections of Niagara Falls in the world, spanning over 200 years.

√ “Painting Water & Cutting Paper: Traditional Turkish Paper Arts” delves into the traditional arts of Turkish paper marbling (ebru) and Turkish paper cutting (kat’ı sanatı) through the works of Hatice Erbas Sorkunlu, a Rochester-based artist who will be present at the event.

√ “Cut, Fold, Roll: Making Art with Paper” is an exhibit curated by Niagara University students that explores locally practiced paper art traditions: including papel picado, origami, and quilling.

At 4:30 p.m., student curators from Niagara University will engage with visitors in “Cut, Fold Roll.” Remarks on the event will begin at 5:30 p.m. A tour of “Niagara in Summer and Winter” with curator Mary Helen Miskuly will take place at 6 p.m.; and a ‘Painting Water’ tour with curator Ed Millar is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Hors d’oeuvres and drinks will be served on the museum’s outdoor porch. Space is limited and RSVP is required. Visit CDA’s “Early Summer Exhibits Reception” page to confirm your attendance.

On Saturday, June 25, CAM will host two free “Art Express” workshops for children from kindergarten to grade 3 with a young audience teaching artist Fotini Galanes. Attendees will walk away with a hand-drawn piece of art and have the chance to explore the vibrant and colorful art exhibit by artist Dorothy Gillespie. Space is limited. Register on the “Program” page of the CAM.
